The Arkaba Walk

The Arkaba Walk is a 3 night, 4 day experience where groups are immersed in the story of the Flinders Ranges of South Australia and Arkaba's 60,000 acre private wildlife conservancy. Set against the backdrop of the Elder Range and Wilpena Pound, an Arkaba walking safari is an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds, the scale and the space of outback Australia in a style that is exclusive and authentic.

Our 'Wild Bush Luxury' philosophy brings a team of passionate guides and a few key creature comforts to an immersive bush experience.

This four day walk for groups of up to 10 walkers, accompanied by an expert guide or guides, whose passion and knowledge of the environment will inspire and motivate their fellow walkers. Guests have the chance to traverse the ancient Flinders Ranges where 600 million years of geological history provide spectacular backdrops throughout the walk. From dry creek beds, isolated waterholes, lined with 1,000 year old red river gums to craggy ridge lines and rolling hills covered in cypress pines to the ancient ramparts of Wilpena Pound, this is one of the most stunning walking country in Australia.

Camps are set up in spectacular locations on the property and are designed to expose you to the surrounding country. You will have the chance to sleep our under that stars in a deluxe swag or under newly erected shelters. At the end of each day, walkers are greeteed by a camp that has been set up in advance, a delicious three-course dinner and a good supply of Australian wines and other beverages.

Walk Grading

A walking holiday can be a very personal experience - one man's stroll can be another's expedition. It is important that you choose the right holiday for your capabilities.

The Arkaba Walk is a 'moderate to challenging' walk. You will cover between 6 to 15km per day over various terrains; along creeks beds, flat plains and some steep, hilly ground with mountain scrambling over rocky surfaces. You can be walking for up to 7 hours per day with plenty of ascents and descents. Whilst you do not need previous trekking experience a good level of fitness is required.

Walk Timings

We ask that all guests arrive at Arkaba Homestead for 10:00am on day 1. Enjoy a cup of tea, overview and briefing before departure. On day 1, you will be transferred to Wilpena Pound at approximately 10:30am where we will set off on foot at 11:00am.

On day 4, the morning is at leisure. You may like to take the opportunity to book an optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound before check out at 11:00am.

Walk Preparations

The best preparation for a walking holiday is to walk. It is a good idea to start conditioning a couple of months before your walking holiday, depending on your existing fitness level. A combination of short and long walks as well as hill climbs and stairs will help to prepare walking over varied terrain. You should be physically active for at least 1-2 hours three times per week.

Enjoy some day hikes at your local national park as this can help you get used to walking on uneven surfaces and break in your walking boots. It is essential that the boots you wear on any walking holiday are well broken in. You will need to carry a daypack for the walk for your water, camera, snacks, lunch, binoculars etc. Walking with a day pack weighing between 4-5 kg will also assist with your preparation.
