Sky is the limit

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES ON DAY THREE

This optional experience collection is designed to bring you closer to Arkaba's seemingly endless mountain ranges and abundant wildlife. It's the Wild Bush Luxury way.

You’ll arrive at the Arkaba Homestead at about 3pm on the third day of your Arkaba Walk and you’re spoilt for choice about how you would like to spend your afternoon. Do as much or as little as you like.

WILDLIFE VIEWING HIDE

Your afternoon may have you heading out on a short walk following the Arkaba Creek through River Red Gum habitat where recovering understory supports healthy populations of galahs, honeyeater species, parrots and Emus. Arkaba’s new viewing hide has been carefully carved out close to the confluence of Arkaba and Woolshed creeks and provides an ideal vantage point for all kinds of wildlife coming to drink. Not only a place to see, but to watch all the fascinating interactions that occur between species up close and personal.

HISTORIC WOOLSHED WALK

It will have become evident to you by now the changes in the landscape with the removal of sheep as part of our conservation work. There are remnants of the pastoral history and our Arkaba Woolshed was built in 1856 and was used as a depot shed for the surrounding properties. The original corrugated iron roof is still on the building to this day, along with the ‘kit-form’ roof struts which were shipped over from Oregon, USA. Back in the blade shearing days it was a 40 stand shed but now, with electric wide combs, it is a five stand shed. You’ll find names etched on the stone wall of shearers gone, dating back to the late 1800s. It’s an optional self-guided 4km round trip along the Arkaba Creek from the Arkaba Homestead.

SCENIC FLIGHT OVER WILPENA POUND

The afternoon light over the ancient ramparts of Wilpena Pound is particularly impressive from the air. This is your opportunity to gain an aerial perspective of this staggeringly beautiful mountain landscape and trace steps from the first day of your Arkaba Walk when you traversed the basin of this natural amphitheatre.

HELI-SUNDOWNER EXPERIENCE

Leave the civilsation of the Homestead for dust and soar over Arkaba’s high country in spectacular style. Marvel as the light changes with the late afternoon sun hitting the raw natural appeal of the outback. You’ll be treated to views of Wilpena Pound, the Chace Range to the east and Elder Range to the west – a complete 360 degree panorama of prehistoric beauty – before landing atop your own remote ridge top, only accessible by helicopter, to enjoy the last light of the day with a glass of bubbles in hand and a Wild Bush Luxury canape platter. Return to the homestead by helicopter as the light finally disappears.

This 1.5 hour experience includes 30 minutes flying time and operates in a Robinson R44 Helicopter. Maximum three people at a time. If you have more in your group or if the combined bodyweight exceeds payload, a number of trips will be made.
$600 per person with a minimum 2 and a maximum of 5 guests.
